A new star, Lana Del Rey

LNAN DEL REY_UMGWith only two music videos (“Video Games” and “Blue Jeans”) uploaded to YouTube, Lana Del Rey has set the Internet on fire. She cultivates a sense of mystery in her homemade videos, which feature 1950s “Hollywood trash” styling and close-ups of herself as if she were gazing into a mirror, rousing curiosity and fascination in the process.Singer-songwriter Lana Del Rey was born Elizabeth “Lizzy” Grant in New York City on June 21, 1986 and grew up in the town of Lake Placid in upstate NY. During her childhood, she realized she had a passion for singing and writing, but it was only when she arrived in New York City at age 18 that she discovered her main musical influences, which include Nina Simone, Nancy Sinatra, Bob Dylan and Nirvana.

The release of her album Born To Die was one of the biggest events of this year. It immediately ranked No. 2 in the sales charts upon its release in the US and No. 1 in France, the UK, Germany, Ireland, Switzerland and Austria. To date, the album has sold over 800,000 copies worldwide and made the Top 10 in over 15 countries. On iTunes, the album ranked No. 1 in 17 countries. In France, Lana Del Ray toppled Coldplay with a new digital sales record: 16,968 albums sold in one week. In the UK, the album sold 117,000 copies in its first week, or more than the four other Top 5 albums combined. Germany saw 87,000 copies sold in the first week. Born To Die went platinum in France and Ireland, double gold in England and gold in Austria, Germany, Poland and Switzerland.
